Ski Tips and Tales
Post your ideas, stories and tips about what makes Nordic skiing so great on the club Skier's blog
From Shawna Ramsey: About The Great Ski Race...Linda McNeil VERY kindly offered to leave her Reno home in the wee hours of the morning on race day in order to meet Shawna and Pat at Cottonwood to transport them to the start of the race in Tahoe City. It looks like she was duly rewarded... Did you know the most wonderful thing happened at the great race? Saint Linda of course was our shuttle queen - and we enjoyed getting to know her while being toasty warm in her Subaru on the way to the Lake. She met us at the finish, with a cold beer waiting, and wearing her Great Race T-shirt, having also shown such good spirit as to participate in the Raffle at the end. And guess what? She won one of the 2 biggest prizes - a new pair of Fischer Skate Skis!!!!! I can't think of a more fitting ending for the most generous woman.
From Dave Campbell: About The Great Ski Race...This was my second time doing the race, and although I finished dead last in my age group I had a great time. The weather was perfect and I talked with lots of nice folks along the way (one advantage of being a slowpoke - you have the time and breath to chat). My only regret is getting to finish line too late to see very many others tackle the final downhill, but there was still plenty of beer, chili, and music to enjoy!
From Sharon Fong: About The Great Ski Race...The first 6 miles were rolling hills, with mostly uphill and a 1000 ft elevation gain, but then lots of downhill and flat with only a few hills. It was a great day for it, with perfect weather. One photo is Shawna and I at the first soup station, the second is Bob Miller coming down the hill, he says it is his last race, maybe he always says that? Another is people coming up the last hill of the 10K, a switch back that I am looking down on them from with great views, and a snow couch at the 2nd soup station.
From Dennis Matthews: Sharing his tip for online nordic ski magazines: Cross Country Skier and Master Skier From Sharon Fong: I have registered for the Great Race March 4, I have wanted to do this ever since I heard of it, finally am committing to it for this year since I am living up here and hope to be able to ski a lot this winter. Here is the website in case anyone else might be interested. http://www.thegreatskirace.com/
From Chuck Zipkin: How my Club bandana saved my face: When an unexpected bitter cold wind came up in the Euer Valley, I thought my nose and mouth were going to freeze. Pulled my Club bandana out of my pack and tied it around my face. Happy to report that the nose is intact and I can still smile!
